A huge topic of dispute in the Laurelhurst neighborhood, the hedge that has previously been encroaching on public green space, offering access to Lake Washington has finally been removed by the neighboring property owner last weekend. According to the Seattle Times, Libby Armintrout, the property owner still needs to remove a sprinkler system and some wires from the property which belong to the State Department of Natural Resources.
The DNR overall is pleased with the progress, and landscaping, the hedge and a fence have all been removed from the property. The land, called Waterway 1, isn’t anything unique, as there are hundreds of waterways, waterfront streets, or parks that the DNR is constantly attempting to defend from such as fencing, property amenities like decks, hot tubs, even basketball courts from defacing the public space. The DNR has a long list of areas to maintain from Lake Washington to Lake Union, and dealing with encroachment is a huge part of the job.
Armintrout said she is relieved to get rid of the hedge, and move forward with a landscaping plan with surrounding neighbors for Waterway 1, a space intended for launching kayaks, or enjoying the view. For more information on the landscaping project, click here.
