Off With the Hedge! Battle Finally Ends Over Public Land

A huge topic of dispute in the Laurelhurst neighborhood, the hedge that has previously been encroaching on public green space, offering access to Lake Washington has finally been removed by the neighboring property owner last weekend. According to the Seattle Times, Libby Armintrout, the property owner still needs to remove a sprinkler system and some wires from the property which belong to the State Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR overall is pleased with the progress, and landscaping, the hedge and a fence have all been removed from the property. The land, called Waterway 1, isn’t anything unique, as there are hundreds of waterways, waterfront streets, or parks that the DNR is constantly attempting to defend from such as fencing, property amenities like decks, hot tubs, even basketball courts from defacing the public space. The DNR has a long list of areas to maintain from Lake Washington to Lake Union, and dealing with encroachment is a huge part of the job.

Armintrout said she is relieved to get rid of the hedge, and move forward with a landscaping plan with surrounding neighbors for Waterway 1, a space intended for launching kayaks, or enjoying the view. For more information on the landscaping project, click here.

US Goverment Proposes New Mortgage Rules

The US government has proposed some new mortgage lending rules that could help many homeowners avoid foreclosure. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau‘s proposed the rules this morning that would require mortgage companies to to offer all borrowers standard monthly statements, and inform customers of any interest rate or insurance changes. Companies would also be responsible for certain “good faith efforts” to inform borrowers at risk of foreclosure, and find options for them to salvage their homes.

An estimated 8 million Americans have faced foreclosure since the housing  market began to sank in 2006. Many homeowners have pledged that mortgage companies failed to inform them of foreclosure threats, or verify information on important foreclosure documents. For more information on the foreclosure proposal, visit the Seattle Times.

Cloud 9 Church Consignment Shop Closes After 53 Years

Seattle’s Roosevelt neighborhood Cloud 9 consignment shop is closing it’s doors, after raising money for charitable purposes for the past 53 years. Cloud 9′s volunteers closed up the shop last month and are beginning  a new phase of fundraising as commercial property in the area heats up; the ladies of Cloud 9 are working on selling their building. They’ve already raised close to 2.4 million for charities from their sales which have built classrooms, wells and a bridge in Africa, and Food for NW banks; the ladies plan to use the money from the building sale for an endowment.

While the building sale will help raise funding for good cause, many were sad to see the shop shut it’s doors, including several of the volunteers coming from St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Laurelhurst. The building, purchased ions ago by the church women is now up for sale for 1.4 million in the Laurelhurst area. The historic building sits across from a future light rail stop and a six story residential/retail development, is attracting a lot of attention from a number of potential developers; more information can be found by visiting the Seattle Times.

Seattle Children’s Hospital Receives Gifts to the Tune of $65 Million

The Laurelhurst-located Seattle Children’s Hospital can invest even more in its research, infrastructure, and staff training. Yesterday, it received two large donations, one $15 million gift and one $50 million gift. The $65 million gifts will help continue Seattle Children’s Hospital’s mission of caring for children and finding breakthroughs in cures and treatment.

In honor of her husband, Jean Reid donated $15 million to the Children’s Bellevue Urgent Care Clinic, the advanced training of nurses, and the Children’s Bellevue Clinic and Surgery Center. To honor this fantastic gift, the Clinic and Surgery Center will be renamed “Robert and Jean Reid Bellevue Clinic and Surgery Center.” This isn’t the first time Jean Reid and her husband have donated to support health. Mrs. Reid and her late husband have donated to the University of Washington School of Nursing and its scholarship program.

The $50 million gift was an anonymous gift from an estate, according to the news release. It is the largest single gift ever received by the hospital  and will go towards benefiting pediatric research at its research institute.

Gifts like this keep Seattle Children’s Hospital competitive in pediatric research. It helps ensure that the best and brightest are working in our neighborhood of Laurelhurst. The support of Seattle Children’s is extraordinary and I hope it continues, so our local hospital can stay at the front of pediatric research.
